SICILY:  A GARDEN OF EDEN

Italian-born Toronto artist, Mimmo Baronello, explores the morphing of nature   in a polluted environment, which mirrors our own struggle to adapt to fast and pervasive technological changes. Human existence is captivated by a tsunami of technological devices that promise knowledge, fame, profit, and happiness all the while consuming our most valuable asset, our time. Our minds are fed with information faster than we are able to process and question. New devices are revolutionizing who we are and what we are. Humans are entering uncharted territories where technology is creating a new reality and existence for all living things. But despite the uncertainties that the man-made future will bring, nature will find a way to evolve and survive.

Baronello’s art blends the mannerist and baroque style present in Sicilian culture and architecture.  By using contemporary imagery displaying the bountiful harvest and richness of eggs, pomegranate, birds, fish, and blossoms, Mimmo explores his roots near Agrigento, home to an ancient Jewish Community.  It is within this light we are reminded that renewal and hope are inevitable.

Sicily:  A Garden of Eden, Mimmo Baronello exhibition hosted by Baycrest is  kindly supported by Villa Charities, the Columbus Centre.

The exhibition will be on display in October 2025.
